Beat the Heat

Every May, New Yorkers begin to complain about the lingering cold weather and where is the sun and will warmer days ever come?? Then you blink and it’s mid June and the dialogue about the weather has shifted drastically to a complete disgust of the wet, sticky heat. I’d be lying if I said I [...]

Dream On

I’ve always been a dreamer. Maybe not in the way you think I mean, but rather, I’ve always had super vivid dreams and no trouble remembering them. I also, and I can’t emphasize this enough, love talking about my dreams. And yours! I love it all. One thing I’ve noticed as I’ve gotten older is [...]

Dan Harris: A Meditating Maximalist

Have you ever had a panic attack? Dan Harris did. Except it wasn’t like mine, which I had in the privacy of my home. It was on-air, as he was news anchoring one of the most popular shows in America. So, looking for ways for this to never happen to him again was how Dan [...]

Haley Boyd

There’s a lot to love about Haley Boyd. At the top of the list is her personal style; timeless with a modern edge that somehow checks the box of both femininity and functionality, all the way down to her shoes, which she happens to design. Marais is her made in Los Angeles line of strappy [...]

Simon Miller

Perhaps I’m partial to the the duo behind Simon Miller (Daniel and Chelsea, who we’ve featured on the site & who I often find myself enjoying a night-cap drink with during PFW) – but their very first pre-collection look book is every bit as enjoyable as their company. A vibrant color palette reminiscent of 1970s [...]

Healthy, at Home Treatments for Facial and Body Acne
Acne can be a horrific thing to go through but the journey does not end there. Scars are a party pooper after all the gashes, the pain, the pus and the suffering go away. What is also important is that you consistently do your scar prevention treatment from the day the wound closes. 1.)Aloe … Continue reading Healthy, at Home Treatments for Facial and Body Acne

Water Baby in Training
Water Baby in Training

I’m starting to lose track of time… Not that I was great at keeping track of it before, haha! But the hours have been blending into each other, because when you’re at the pool, and you’re splashing around, time feels slow, but fast at the same time. It’s weird.

I was hoping that Connor would like the water. She’d never gone into a pool or the ocean before this trip… Well, we took her to Ocean Beach in SF once when she was about six months old, but she squealed and kicked when her toes touched the water. It was cold and gray, though. Not like the ocean here.

They have a really cool baby pool at the resort that’s shallow for the little ones, and the bottom of the pool is sandy. It’s a sandy bottom, and I brought the baby there yesterday.

I mean, it would have been fine if Connor wasn’t into it, but she laughed and smiled and played and had a good time.

I had a good time yesterday, too. I just hung out with El Hub and my brother all day long. We left all of our crap in the hotel room with my mom and dad, and then went to the pool.

Early Morning Aloha
Early Morning Aloha

Could you be anymore photogenic, Oahu? It’s almost unfair how good you look first thing in the morning.

On my walk this morning, along with learning that the resort has sunrise yoga in the morning (I’m going tomorrow to get my downward dog on in the sand), I found out that *all* product shots should be product shots in paradise.

Juara Candlenuit Beauty Creme is a super rich body cream that smells like citrus and plumeria.

I got a big jar in a SpaceNK sampler and will probably spring for a full-size one when I get home.

The Pixi Makeup Melting Cleansing Cloths smell tropical, too. Like jasmine.

I only brought one tube of waterproof mascara with me (MAC In Extra Dimension Waterproof) and these wipes take it off completely.

Yes, I’m usually the freak who brings multiple mascara tubes on trips, but not this time! Generally, I think I did pretty well resisting the temptation to overpack, but I may or may not have ended up bringing an extra pan of glitter shadow with me… Whoopsie!

Makeup and Beauty Blog Monday Poll, Vol. 479
Makeup and Beauty Blog Monday Poll, Vol. 479

So…what is the Monday Poll?

Well, it isn’t exactly a poll. It’s more of a constantly evolving (devolving?), somewhat random list of questions I’ve been putting out to readers every Monday morning for the past 10 (!) years. (It’s like a kickstart for your brain.) I’ve always enjoyed reading your answers in the comments, and I hope you enjoy reading mine.

1. Someone you’d like to pinch?

If we’re living in reality, then Connor Claire, on her cheeks. If we’re not living reality, then Zac Efron.

Don’t ask me where I’d pinch him, HAHAHA!

2. How many kittens would you like today?

Three would be great, thanks! I’ll take one ragdoll, one gray tabby and a tortie to go, please.

3. Those cold-shoulder tops that are seriously freaking everywhere — yes or no?

Sure, why not? Some are pretty cute.

4. Cream, liquid, gel or powder blush — which is your favorite formula and why?

Ooh! That’s tough. I love how extra special cream blushes look on skin, like the color is part of your cheeks and not just sitting on top of it, but I also love powder blushes because they’re so much fun to blend.

Sundays With Tabs the Cat, Makeup and Beauty Blog Mascot, Vol. 453
Sundays With Tabs the Cat, Makeup and Beauty Blog Mascot, Vol. 453

Ah… Peace and quiet. That’s what Tabs is looking forward to this week, getting some peace and quiet. He’ll have the office mostly to himself too. Just him and his favorite pet sitter/gravy preparer/executive assistant.

He told me this morning that he plans to spend a great deal of time contemplating career moves in his kitty sanctuary, which is where he likes to go to let his mind wander. It used to be known as “the back deck,” but that was prior to the recent renovations.

Even the Tabby Command Center was upgraded with a new state-of-the-art catnip delivery system.

Being a benevolent dictator, Tabs was nice enough to allow me to also plant some tomatoes and basil for office use, but most of the kitty sanctuary foliage is of the zinnia and fuchsia varieties.

I’m gonna miss my tabby this week. 🙁 But we have a few Skype video meetings scheduled, of course.

Saturday Surfing: June 10th, 2017
Saturday Surfing: June 10th, 2017

Um…is anybody else low-key freaking out about the new Trader Joe’s Fearless Flyer?

I guess they redesigned it, and I just got one in the mail the other day.

First impression? “Ooh, colorful!” But it seemed kind of thin with fewer pages than usual. Then I set it aside to read later in bed. (Don’t judge! It’s normally great bedtime reading.)

I can’t believe it! Where did all the rambling intros with fun facts about coffee beans, weather patterns, ducklings and four-leaf clovers go?? Or the clever puns and silly wordplay? Everything in this new version is succinct, matte-of-fact and blah. It looks great, but dayum, TJ, why you gotta do me like that!? BRING BACK THE OLD FEARLESS FLYER!

On that note, a little light reading for your Saturday morning (beauty and otherwise)…

  • The hidden history behind the Maybelline New York makeup line
  • Ehrmahgawhd! The print on this dress is purr-fection. WANT.
  • Lumpia and pancit for everyone! The food of my people is gonna be the next big culinary thing, according to Vogue.
  • Everything you’ve ever wanted to know about Clinique Black Honey Almost Lipstick
  • How do the chemicals in sunscreen protect our skin from damage?
